“Logan, could I speak to you for a minute?” she said, touching his chair as she passed. “In private.”

Angelina smiled at Kelly, who smiled straight back at her, but it was the little girl who truly melted her heart, now that she knew her story. Ange hadn’t approached the table on her way back from the restroom, going back to her sister and eating their meal first, but she’d known that she only had a small window of time before they both left, and she wanted to talk to him.

“You want to join us?” Logan asked. “I lost my manners before.”

No, you lost your best friend and today’s the anniversary, she wanted to say, but instead, she pushed the thoughts away. “It’s fine, we’re about to go, so I wondered if we could talk for a moment?”

Logan nodded, and she watched as he excused himself from the table. He ruffled Lucy’s hair as he stood, and she walked nervously with him to the front of the restaurant where no one could hear them. It was quiet, with not many people about on a Tuesday, and she was grateful for a few minutes alone with him.

“Sorry I didn’t call you back. It’s been a rough day,” he said, and as he looked down at her, she wished she’d known so she could have been there for him. “And a pretty rough night last night if I’m honest.”

“Kelly told me,” she said quietly. “In the bathroom before. I thought she was, I mean, I thought they both were … something else to you.”

His eyebrows shot up, and she wished she hadn’t even said anything. “Yeah, well, like I said, it’s been rough.”

“I wish you’d told me, about her and about what this day meant for you,” she said, reaching out to touch his arm. But Logan wasn’t warm like he’d been to Lucy or to Kelly—she’d been watching him the entire time—he was cold as he pulled away, like she’d hit a sore spot. “I know things have become complicated between us, but I really wish you’d been honest with me—”

“Are you serious?” he said, his voice low. “You expect me to tell you everything when you’re so clearly hiding the reason you’re home? I think we’re both good at hiding things, Ange, so don’t make out like it’s all on me.”

She stared back at him, trying to stop her jaw from hitting the ground. “Logan,” she started, but he was quick to cut her off.

“Why are you here, Ange? What are you hiding? Now you know my secrets, how about you tell me yours?” He shook his head. “Yeah, I didn’t think so. I didn’t push you because I didn’t want to tell you what I was dealing with, but it looks like you found out anyway. What’s the saying? Pot calling the kettle black?”

She wanted to tell him, was ready to open up and tell him everything—why she was home, what she’d done, what she’d lost—but Logan didn’t give her the chance.
